Education at the Institute for Experiential Robotics
From hands-on undergraduate clubs to a dedicated Master’s program, Northeastern offers multiple pathways into robotics. Doctoral students pursue robotics research across 40+ faculty-led laboratories spanning the university’s colleges.
Northeastern University Robotics Club
Northeastern undergraduates can dive into robotics through the NU Robotics Club, a student-run organization that builds competition robots, hosts workshops, and welcomes members from every major. The club operates out of the College of Engineering and regularly showcases its work at institute events.
Master of Science in Robotics
The MS in Robotics at Northeastern University is a graduate interdisciplinary program offered by the College of Engineering and the Khoury College of Computer Science. The curriculum blends coursework in AI, computer vision and perception, controls, and mechanical design with Northeastern’s signature co-op experience, giving students the opportunity to work in industry-leading robotics labs before they graduate. A very large number of Manipulators, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Quadrupeds, Humanoids, an Autonomous Car, Autonomous Surface Vessels and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles exist through various labs and provide realistic platforms for study and research.
Pursue Robotics at the PhD Level
Doctoral students pursue robotics research within their home departments — Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, and others — while collaborating across 40+ IER-affiliated laboratories. This cross-disciplinary model means PhD students can draw on expertise in AI, control systems, biomedical engineering, materials science, and more.
Find a Lab or Advisor
Prospective MS and PhD students are encouraged to explore the IER website to learn about ongoing research across the university, identify faculty whose work aligns with their interests, and reach out to potential advisors directly.
